Chapter 26

Elias

When Blair and I got back to Devil’s Falls, Demetrius was standing next to his SUV.

As I climbed out of the car, I said, “What are you doing? You’re supposed to be on a scavenger hunt.”

“Chill, Elias. We’re getting my metal detector out,” Demetrius replied.

“You carry a metal detector everywhere you go?” Blair questioned.

I glanced over at her, trying to suppress a smile. It was like she had read my mind.

“Is it really such a foreign concept to everyone around here that I just so happen to bring my metal detector everywhere I go? Geez, Louise.” He shook his head exasperatedly.

“So, what exactly do we need a metal detector for?” I asked.

“Camryn had this idea that what we’re looking for might be buried,” Demetrius explained. “Can’t hurt to check, at least.”

“You know, she might be onto something. It really wouldn’t surprise me. What were the odds that we’d even think to use a metal detector, let alone have access to one?” I thought aloud.

“Yeah, but I got to tell ya, Elias, if she’s not right about this, then I really am not sure how we’re going to find this thing. We scoured the woods pretty good, me and Lynda, and I don’t see anything even resembling gold.”

“Well, whatever it is, it has to be there somewhere,” Blair insisted.

“Actually, that’s what I’m trying to get at. What if it isn’t there?” Demetrius asked. “What if we’re being led to believe that there’s something in those woods when really, there isn’t anything at all?”

“So, you think that someone is trying to trick us,” I pieced together.

“If the shoe fits.” He shrugged.

“Well, let’s not think that way yet,” Blair said, flipping her blonde hair over one shoulder. “Let’s not jump to conclusions until after we try using that metal detector.’

“Yeah, I’m sure whatever we’re looking for is probably buried somewhere,” I agreed.

“Yeah. Guess we’ll see,” Demetrius said with a shrug as he closed his trunk. “You kids back from the grocery store already?”

“Yes, and what a dramatic event that turned out to be,” Blair replied with an eye roll.

“Dramatic?” Demetrius glanced over at her. “What, did some kid spill everything in Aisle Two?”

“No, there was another pack. The Dunning pack,” I explained. “They weren’t exactly happy that we were in their territory.”

“I see.” His eyes clouded over with a dark expression. “But they left you alone?”

“Yeah, the Alpha – Sam – actually gave me his card. Told me to give him a call if we need anything while we’re in the area.”

“Throw that card away,” Demetrius instructed.

“Why?” I questioned as I opened my own trunk and began to pull the grocery bags out.

“Nothing good can come from asking another pack for help,” he replied, shaking his head. “Help doesn’t come without strings attached. The last thing you want is to owe anyone anything.”

“Yeah, I guess,” I replied, even though I had no intention to throw Sam’s card away. Not until we beat this game. I wasn’t sure what hurdles would be thrown
